Knocked-out tooth: first aid in the next few minutes
An adult tooth has the best chance of being saved if it's back in place within the hour. Stay calm and follow these steps while someone calls us.
- Pick it up by the crown — never the root. Hold the white chewing part. Touching the root damages the cells that help it reattach.
- Rinse it gently if it's dirty. A quick rinse with milk or water. Don't scrub, don't use soap, and don't dry it.
- Try to put it back in the socket. Ease it in facing the right way and bite softly on a clean cloth to hold it.
- Can't reinsert it? Keep it moist. Store the tooth in a cup of milk, or tuck it inside your cheek. Saliva works too. Never let it dry out.
- Come in within 30–60 minutes. Call on the way so we're ready the moment you arrive. (254) 848-2722
Every knocked-out tooth is different
How much time has passed, how the tooth was stored, and whether it's a baby or adult tooth all shape what we can do. Get in fast and we'll know your best option quickly.
In within the hour
A clean adult tooth kept moist and reinserted quickly has the strongest chance of reattaching.
Stored in milk
Milk keeps the root cells alive longer than water or air. Bring the tooth — we'll assess it right away.
Dry too long
If the tooth dried out, reattachment is less likely — but we still need to treat the socket and plan next steps.
A child's baby tooth
Baby teeth usually aren't put back. Still call us — we'll check the socket and the adult tooth underneath.
If it can't be saved
A dental implant is the gold-standard replacement — and Dr. Maupin has placed 4,500+ of them in-house.
Empty socket
Even if the tooth is gone, the socket needs cleaning and a plan to protect the bone for the future.

A surgeon's skill, a hometown calm
Dr. Paul Maupin focuses on surgical dentistry — extractions, root canals, and implants. If your tooth can be saved, he'll work fast to save it. If it can't, you're already with the dentist who can replace it.
- 4,500+ dental implants placed — emergencies handled start to finish, no referral needed.

Knocked-out tooth questions
How quickly do I need to come in?
As fast as you can — ideally within 30–60 minutes. An adult tooth that's kept moist and reinserted quickly has the best chance of reattaching. Call us on your way (Mon–Thu, 8am–4pm).
How should I store the tooth?
Best is back in the socket. If you can't, put it in a cup of milk or tuck it inside your cheek so saliva keeps it moist. Never store it dry or in plain tissue, and don't scrub the root.
What if it's been longer than an hour?
Still call and come in. Even if the tooth can't be saved, the socket needs care, and Dr. Maupin can plan a strong replacement like an implant in-house.
Will it hurt?
We numb the area fully before anything, and oral sedation is available if you're anxious. Most patients are surprised how comfortable it is.
What will it cost?
It depends on the treatment, and we'll give you an honest estimate before we start. We accept most major insurance and offer financing.
